Please contact us if you are interested in pro bono opportunities.

Pro bono attorneys work alongside Human Rights USA’s staff to investigate human rights abuses, conduct legal research, and litigate our cases. Working with us can involve every aspect of litigation—from fact gathering, to drafting a complaint, to responding to motions to dismiss and other filings, through discovery (including depositions), and, depending on the course of the case, settlement discussions or trial.

Human Rights USA is looking for legal assistance for the following projects:

  • •   Defending women refugees from deportation to various forms of
        gender-based persecution.
  • •   Defending women and girls seeking asylum from forced marriages and
        other gender-based abuses.
  • •   Challenging abusive U.S. Government detention policies.
  • •   Researching the structure of U.S.-based companies to determine
relationships with entities in foreign countries.
  • •    Researching and drafting memos on cutting-edge issues in international
         law.
  • •    Researching and drafting memos on federal causes of action against the
U.S. government, like the Administrative Procedures Act, for failure to
enforce legislation relevant to international law and human rights.
  • •    Investigating the availability of assets (some potentially frozen by the UN)
in claims against human rights violators.

Human Rights USA would like to assist you with cases that address the following issues:
•    Access to habeas for detainees held by the U.S. Government in Iraq,
Afghanistan, and other overseas detention facilities.
•    The DOD’s and CIA’s failure to adopt regulations to guide their practice
of rendering detainees to foreign states to be detained or interrogated,
as is required under domestic and international law.
•    Women and girls seeking asylum from forced marriages and other forms
     of gender-based abuses.
•    Government surveillance of human rights defenders.
•    Petitions against the U.S Government to the Inter-American Commission
on Human Rights and other international human rights bodies.

Human Rights USA relies heavily on the critical legal support of pro bono attorneys and partner law firms. Contact us to learn about opportunities for pro bono involvement in our current human rights cases.
