HRUSA Named Amicus in First U.S. Criminal Prosecution for Torture |
Chuckie Taylor, son of former Liberian President Charles Taylor (pictured), is the first person to be prosecuted for torture in the U.S.
Human Rights USA is working with some of the survivors of the massive human rights abuses that took place in Liberia during Charles Taylor's presidency in their efforts to seek justice and move their country forward. Together we are playing a major role in the landmark criminal prosecution of Taylor's son, "Chuckie" on the first ever criminal charges for torture ever brought by the United States under the statutes implementing the U.N. Convention Against Torture. We are also investigating other potential legal actions for the survivors of torture abuses in Liberia, and helping LIberian human rights groups develop accountability mechanisms and advocate for legal standards in their country.
Our involvement in the first criminal prosecution under the Convention Against Torture (CAT) is
unprecedented. We were able to convince the court to allow us to
participate in the case as amicus curiae (friend of the court) -- one
of the only times that amicus status has been granted in a criminal
case at the trial level -- so that we could address two key isses
raised by Chuckie Taylor's attorneys.
